Value of a Family…vs…Family values? What’s the difference? Well, from a layman’s approach; I suggest that the term “Value of a Family” is almost extinct. I grew up in an environment… knowing… that we actually had a family…small though it was. On the other hand, FAMILY VALUES is certainly possible… no matter the size of the family unit.
Today, the family-unit is, too often, just a Mother and some number of children. We ought to call “it” the Value of an IN-COMPLETE family. A family is not complete without both parents in residence. A Mother, a Father, and their children… make up a complete family unit.
On the other hand, a family value is that certain condition that exudes “values” from whatever number of family members that are in the family unit… and whose job it is to instill such values to all members of the family. So… to me, FAMILY VALUES will trump the Value of a Family… even though… both are extremely important.
I came from a very small and scattered family, and my wife came from a very large and local family. Her family became mine; and their values over-laid those values that my Mother instilled in me. Even though… my own Mother married four times, and my father…eh… six times… my Mother instilled in me a strong set of family values… that govern my life, still, today. We are told in… Ephesians 6:1-2 – Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”–which is the first commandment with a promise.
