“…A few days later, he left town, and I didn’t see him again for nearly 60 years…”

Image result for caricature of two boys fightingI did something that I’ve not often done, but he deserved it… and I accommodated him.  I “cold-cocked” him right across the chin….sending his “skinny-self” to the sidewalk. I had been telling him…”don’t do that!” He had been running his mouth in front of some other people, cussing, using some “sign language,” that was un-becoming of a person claiming to be a “nice guy.” I was brought up different then he… apparently; but I was DETERMINED to “teach him a lesson.”  A few months later, he left town, and I didn’t see him again for nearly 60 years. He was 14, and I had just turned 15.  He “joined the army,” at age 15.  Today…. He’s one of my best friends, and I VALUE his friendship.  Sometimes we have to learn things the hard way.  He was the student…. I…was the teacher. We’re all “teachers,” to a great extent, and cussing in front of the 5th graders was not appropriate. I recently visited a school “event” where a teacher was having to turn around and tell a 6th grader to act in a certain manner. As soon as she turned her back… he was “acting up” to impress the younger children. Over and over … she told him. This young lad, through his bad example… was teaching the younger students to “disobey authority.” The younger kids were “looking up to him,” and he “miss-used his status.” We have a responsibility to “act a certain” way… throughout life. We NEVER know who is observing us. My friend of 60 years ago had to learn the hard way.   On that particular day…. I was his teacher, and I think that I made an “impression” on him. We are told in 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Titus 2:7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity. Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Ephesians 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. …Blessings… cjlb…5/7/15
