SALESMEN: I have the greatest respect for SALESMEN. It’s true… today’s salesmen are “more educated” then any generation of salesmen in history; particularly in terms of “product knowledge,” which is due to the technical complexity of today’s products verses yesterday’s.
Don’t misunderstand…., now, I’m not advocating anything like a generation of poorly educated salesmen….the contrary; I will always favor more education for any field of endeavor. What I intend to convey… is that if there is such an issue where less education is more acceptable, then the sales profession is going to be the profession where one can excel the most… over other fields, particularly the more technical. Being a salesman is the one profession where one can excel by pure instinct.
The most necessary ingredient is that the salesman “know his product,” and believes in his product…then he can sell his product. This is more important today, because of the weak economy, cost of education, and cost of living….forcing more young people into the job market sooner, and with less education. Out of necessity… many of these same people have returned to their parent’s home to cut down on their living expenses, while seeking new employment…. Or more education.
A good salesman can sell his product regardless… because “he’s a born salesman.” Almost all successful salesmen are “born salesmen.” A born salesman can sell anything; but first… he must sell himself.
The Bible tells us…in Proverbs 11:30… “He who wins souls is wise.” This is the critical element in salesmanship. If the salesman has not won the soul…then trying to sell the product or service is, generally, a waste of time. In the process of “winning the soul,”…. You will also win the purchaser’s trust, their confidence, and their friendship; and therefore their business.
If you don’t believe me… then ask a salesman. …Blessings….cjlb… 3/28/16.
