So…you think you’re somebody now? I’ve been there and done that… About 45 years ago, my then boss, and I were in New York working on a business deal. That first evening, after dinner… we were walking down 5th Avenue, and 42nd street, and pausing, he said to me…. Brooks…the problem with you is that you’ve arrived, and you don’t know it.”
It was several years later when that remark began to make sense to me. What he was actually referring to…I believe, was that I’ve made a name for myself in the business community… and I was too naive to even realize it.
Fortunately for me, those few degrees of success… that God has blessed me with… have never gone to my head. For some of us…it does. Of itself, it’s not that difficult to deal with… but when you let your ego, pride, and self-adoration get in the way…as some of do on occasion… then you have a problem. Then, sooner or later… someone, or some circumstance, will cut you down to size.
Being over-confident, and cocky, is not a very good mix. I’ve been bucked to my knees a couple of times, and it’s no fun. Invariably, the sense of “being somebody”… includes financial, career, and home issues. The combination of one or two of those conditions… most people can handle, but all three….wow…Katie, bar the door.
It’s the cool-hand and level-head… that can pick up the pieces and move on… and all the while…learn from it all, and developing one’s self, such, that it won’t be duplicated. We are told in …Genesis 4:7 – If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”
