Doing the right thing: All of us…. YES… all of us, learned at an early age…to do the right thing. Our parents taught us, or our teachers instilled it in us, an aunt or uncle, family member, or minister…SOMEONE taught us right from wrong.
And, if all of those people FAILED, then the Holy Spirit stepped in to pick up the pieces…and enlightened us…sometimes, even… in ways we, seemingly, lacked understanding. But the bottom line…we all learned… the right thing to do… despite our own faults.
Having been around the bush a few times, I have found, that….just because you know the right thing to do…doesn’t always mean that you follow your own good advice… or, that of others. We just… plain’o’ignore… good advice, or that ‘inner-being’ telling us, or reminding us… to do this… and not that. And, on top of that, some of us, just feel like we can do ‘whatever the heck’ we want to… ill regardless of the consequences.
Later in life…and, often times….we are continually reminded to do the right thing…say the right thing… be the right person… make the right decision. That inner voice….the Holy Spirit….. Is generally the One who is reminding us…if not, then, our Spouse is there to do the job.
Bottom line: Listen ….pay attention. We all know right from wrong. Just do it!
It’s a simple decision. Do what is RIGHT. The consequences for ‘doing right’ far out-weigh’ the consequences of doing it wrong. We all have made ‘bad choices,’ and have PAID the PRICE for our miss-step. Sometimes, it’s just a money issue, or a character issue, maybe a reputational issue…and for some… a personal calamity will surface… such that ‘our entire well-being’ is suddenly AT-STAKE. And, if ‘that’ happens…then obviously…. We made the wrong decision… and we’re going to pay the piper.
And…No… I’m not talking about making a choice between two ‘right ways’, but rather, choosing between a ‘right way,’ and a ‘wrong way. ’Choices… is the greatest power we have available to us. As Christians, we should always opt to choosing to do the right thing. In reality… we are choosing between LOVING, and NOT to LOVE. This is because God’s love for us and our love for Him compels us to want to do good…not evil. We are to love and serve others… because He first loved us.
In 1 Corinthians 13:4, we are told… “Love is patient and kind; Love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant…” God’s love moves us forward to do the right things in our lives. Because He first loved us, we also try to be patient and kind in all circumstances.
And… we see that Galatians 6:9, encourages us… “And let us not grow weary of ‘doing good,’ for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” Doing ‘good’ is a life-long race. This is such an encouraging verse because it reminds us that ‘doing good’ is not an occasional effort… but a life-long race. Even though we are tempted by our own selfish desires… we should always opt to do the right thing. In the long run…no one regrets doing good… because it not only cleanses our conscience… but we reap a heavenly reward.
