I believe that satan is granted “particular power” over humans that God allows…. because God has given us “free-will.” I don’t believe that satan can do that which God forbids him, whatever that might be. While we don’t know the extent of satan’s power; we do know that he was allowed to tempt Jesus, that he was granted certain powers over Job’s processions, family, and household. But God, forbade satan from “laying a finger” on Job. From our perspective, when we have been “approached by satan,” and allow him a “foot-hold,” (Ephesians 4:27 – “BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an FOOTHOLD”), then I believe that God will allow satan to do that which “we want him to do.”
But remember… every time we are tempted by satan; God will intervene for just a moment, approaching us through that inner-voice, or, He uses another person to intervene, or a sudden phone call from a caring friend (I speak from experience), who calls to CAUTION us not to do this, or that. We’ve all had some kind of intervention happen to us; and think to ourselves. WOW… God sure was looking out after me….as I was about to do this or that. Saved by the Bell. Even Nixon’s Senior Whitehouse Advisor Harry Dent, from Watergate fame, said that he would have been in the MIDDLE of all the evilness of the Watergate break-in, had it not be for HR Haldeman not wanting him in on the “deed.” God actually used a Watergate co-conspirator to SAVE the hide of Harry Dent.
God may use an “event;” like a missed taxi that prevented us from being somewhere at a certain time….with evil intentions. When we give satan “the go-ahead,” then God will back out, and ALLOW satan his way; because we preferred what satan had to offer, rather than God’s offer of Paradise. In other words….we made a deal with satan. And, we got what we wanted and deserved. So, YES, satan does have power over us. But remember this: we can take the power from satan whenever we wish…. Whenever we decide to “follow Jesus.” It’s when we back away from Jesus, that satan has the most power over us. When we push Jesus away… then God will move over and “allow” satan in. Where satan is… God is not. But, here’s the rub. At any time…. God can “call our number,” and if we happen to be in bed with satan…. Then, we’re in a heap of trouble. It’s best we stay out of bed with satan, and his helpers.
Why risk the Glory of God, the peace and Love of Heaven…for the likes of satan? But it happens every day, even people sitting next to us in church. Some are there doing satan’s bidding. They’re there, not to worship God, or serve mankind… But to serve satan and his evilness. BEWARE. We’re told in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” The devil is loose in the world today; he’s walking up and down it just like he did in the days of Job. Let us not “settle in the comfort of the world,” but rather, we should seek the protection of Jesus Christ, through prayer… Matthew 6:9-13 – “This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
… I’ve long held the position that while satan “may have” power over me; I contend that I have “one-power-more” than him….and that is FREEDOM-of-CHOICE, and I can choose to deny him; and there’s nothing he can do about it. Thanks-be-to-GOD. …Blessings…cjlb …10/20/14
