“…Don’t EVER SOCIALIZE with Tommy Gold, as one day, he’ll clean your cage…”

20131213_173543 (2)Don’t socialize with the BOSS. That was the advice I got from a former employer. Some 45 years ago.

I was working as Asst. Corporate Controller at a large, state-wide, wholesaler; and… much to my surprise; one day, I walked into a meeting to find a former employer in attendance.   He was equally as surprised… to find me there, as well.

My company President was also surprised that the two of us were well acquainted. After the meeting, my former employer… right in FRONT of my current employer said to me: “Brooks… Let me give you some good advice… Don’t EVER SOCIALIZE with Tommy Gold (my current boss), as one day, he’ll clean your cage.”

Hiding my shock… I thanked him… telling him that I’d keep his advice in mind, and went on my way. Over the next several years, I found his advice to be “very sound.”  I watched others “get too close to the boss” …and, they all regretted it. I took his GOOD-ADVICE to heart… and have made it a career long policy…. NEVER SOCIALIZE with the BOSS. Further, I’ve never allowed myself to socialize with my own employees over the years.

Does that mean you can’t be friendly with people? …. Of course not! But getting “too friendly” will, more often than not… come back to haunt you. We’ve all heard stories of the guy whom the Boss asked to take his beautiful daughter out on the town… and later, in his quest to get ahead, ended up marrying the Boss’s daughter.   And for goodness sakes… don’t play sports with the boss… it’s NEVER a WIN-WINN… in the end… it’s always a LOSE…LOSE. REMEMBER you heard it here.

Proverbs 2:6-8 – For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. God will give you the desire of your heart, if you serve him.

Being a good boss, mentor and friend to your employees… does not mean strong socialization is necessary… in order to achieve the desired results. Sleep well knowing God’s always there to protect you.

Blessings …cjlb… 11/25/16
