“…Humor has its place…. somewhere …. sometime…. but it takes a little common-sense to determine when and where…”

The other day… I heard Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly call someone a “loon.” I had heard the term, of course, but couldn’t remember exactly what it meant, other than; (because O’Reilly used the term [I think] to describe Fox Correspondent John Stossel), in a negative connotation.

The Merriam Dictionary defined it in three ways…the Short version, a Summary version, and the In-formal version.  It goes from bad to worse. The Short version is: a foolish or silly person.  The Summary version is: fool, idiot, ass, halfwit, dunce, dolt, ignoramus, moron, imbecile, simpleton; MorelunaticThe Informal version is: dope, ninny, nincompoop, dimwit, jackass, blockhead, jug head, bonehead, knucklehead, fathead, numbskull, dumb-ass, dunderhead, ditz, dipstick, thickhead, meathead, meatball, wooden-head, airhead, pinhead, butthead, lamebrain, pea-brain, birdbrain, mouth-breather, jerk, nitwit, twit, boob, loony, nut, nutcase, nutjob, fruitcake, crank, crackpot, screwball, crazy, kook, wacko, and dingbat.

Frankly, I was shocked that a simple four-letter word, such as LOON, could be so derogatory.  It made me wonder…Is John Stossel the LOON; or is Bill O’Reilly a LOON, for calling him one.  This may be a case of using words that are simply not necessary to describe another person. That said, I’ll take not give it another “space” in this article, so as not to add to its un-deserved notoriety.   Humor has its place…. somewhere …. sometime…. but it takes a little common-sense to determine when and where.

We are taught in Ephesians 5:4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.  Also, in 2 Timothy 2:14-16 Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers.  Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness.  And, in Matthew 12:36 I tell you, on the Day of Judgment people will give account for every word.

For me, I’ll just say….Blessings…cjlb …1/20/15
