“… I decide on happiness ahead of time…” It’s a CHOICE!

Image result for caricature of Happiness is a choiceHAPPINESS …choice…or chance? From the perspective of a 92-year-old, proud man, who dresses by eight o’clock, perfectly well groomed… though legally blind… moved to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, necessitating the move.

After waiting patiently in the lobby for many hours, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he moved his walker to the elevator, I described his room and the eyelet sheets hanging on his window. I love it,’ he said with the enthusiasm of a youngster. Mr. Jones, you haven’t seen the room.

“That doesn’t matter,” I decide on happiness ahead of time. How the furniture is arranged doesn’t determine my happiness … it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. ‘It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can lie in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that don’t work, or get out of bed thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift – as long as my eyes open, I’ll focus on the memories I’ve stored away. Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you’ve put in. My advice would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories!

Mr. Jones has a perspective on “happiness” that would be worth emulating at any age, much less 92. I also have a perspective…to me…happiness is a “frame-of-mind.” Like Mr. Jones…I choose to have happiness. I decide each day… not to let the “issues of the day” determine my disposition…my happiness…as it were.

Because we are made in the Image of God…we also are the recipient of the special GIFT of HAPPINESS. We are told in Galatians 5:22 The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, and peace.”  And from Ephesians 2:26 “To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and happiness.”

But God…true to form, doesn’t FORCE anything on us…rather…it’s ours for the choosing; that is to say: it is our choice to make the right choice (pleasing God), or the wrong choice (to displease Him). The choice is ours to make, therefore…..Happiness “is a choice,” and therefore… a frame of mind.

…Blessings … 12/10/15
