“…I didn’t see the point in making a commitment, or an ‘unnecessary oath.’  I stand by my statement!  Yes ….is YES…”

COMMITMENT…. Some months ago, my bible study leader asked for us to COMMIT to reading the bible completely through… in the next 12 months.  This was brought about because one of the guys had ‘just read the bible in a matter of 30 days.’  I was the only one out of some 20 guys who would ‘not commit.’  He said; “you mean you don’t want to do it?”  I said, “Oh yes, I wanted to do, but didn’t want to COMMIT to doing it.  He asked (very nicely) why?  I said…If I COMMIT to doing it… then I’ll ‘have to do it.’  I didn’t want to read the bible because ‘I committed to doing it.’   I wanted to read the bible because… I wanted to read the bible. I was going to do it, but my making a commitment to doing it would not affect rather I did it, or not.”  Committing to do it, was, to me, equating to “swearing, or taking an oath, to do it,” and the Bible cautions AGAINST that.

The bible says in Matthew 5:37 – “But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes ‘ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these is of evil.

So, you see, I didn’t see the point in making a commitment, or an “unnecessary oath.”  I stand by my statement!  Yes ….is yes.

Let’s remember what Peter promised (Commitment) …to Jesus, in… Matthew 26:32-35 – But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.” Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.”  Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”  Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And so said all the disciples.  Even Peter, the “Rock of the Church” was unable to keep his promise to Christ.

Many Blessings as we …simply say …YES.  That’s ‘all’ that Jesus asks for… a simple YES.   …cjlb…11/28/2017

PS:  I did read the bible… but not in 12 months.  It took me 25 LONG days.  You do the math.
