Defining Moment? Or… is it the Re-defining moment? What’s the difference? Aren’t they both the same, maybe one an extension of the other? Not so fast. Re-define, well, that would mean to define again, or differently… much the same as changing directions, courses, plans of action; or if politically, changing concepts. All of which could be rather drastic.
Can you re-define your career? Maybe going from a General Practitioner to a Radiologist. I have a doctor friend, who the first 20 years of his professional career, he was a successful attorney, who nearly 50, decided to RE-DEFINE his career objective to become a medical doctor. Today…he considered one of the best in this area. Another friend spent his entire 50 year career in the business community, has gone back to school at age 77, RE-DEFINING his career, to become a history teacher.
Then we have Peter who RE-DEFINED his career from fisherman to Apostle/Preacher, later suffering the same death as Jesus Christ…crucified, except “up-side-down.” Peter requested to be crucified up-side-down, so as not to die as Jesus did.
In Luke 5:10, we are told …And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt be fishers of men.
Some of us, probably many…if we’re paying attention to God, find ourselves…re-defining our careers through the process of surrendering to His will. As in my own case. Some nineteen years ago…I decided to retire from the everyday grind of being chased by the alligator… choosing, instead, to set back and enjoy the fruits of the previous 35 years.
Then, about five years ago… I finally heard, and recognized “the call” from God…as found in Matthew 28:19…Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I realized, finally….that Jesus was talking to me…. as well. Thanks be to God!
As a side note…I first heard “the call” in May of 1957, while attending a lecture held by the late, and great, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin….the problem then...I wasn’t listening.
I ignored “that call” for over 50 years…that is, until mid-2012… and set about “re-defining” my career… my life… and my future; such that… today, I work…get this…”full-time” …going about the work of Jesus Christ. Writing this very article… for BrOOKS-of-WISDOM, each day, is part and parcel of the re-defining process. Serving man-kind, through business, personal, and spiritual counseling…is yet, another part.
The good news is… we don’t have to wait 50 years to determine what God is expecting from us. This re-defining process can be determined, and recognized by having a closer walk with Jesus. We can do this through prayer, through loving our neighbor, through a stronger family commitment, through pro-bono work… and by participating in community and church activities that are directed toward “helping others.” We all…can be “fishers of men.”
