THE BURNING BUSH: … Several years ago; I was driving a major boulevard near my part of town, and saw a BURNING BUSH in front of someone’s personal residence; which belonged to an acquaintance. I did a quick U-Turn… retuned to the burning bush… located a garden hose, and extinguished the fire. At very small risk, I took a moment to take a phone-photo of the burning bush before putting the fire out. I’ve returned to that picture many times, since, and always reminded of the story of Moses and the BURNING BUSH. (Exodus 3:1-5).
I took this particular “Burning Bush” to be my own… one… which, I felt represented a turning point in my life. My Burning Bush raised questions in my mind…as to what I was doing (or not doing)… why, how often, and for whom, in terms of fulfilling Christ’s demand on ME and utilizing those “God-Given” talents He gave me.
At age 73, having enjoyed some amount of success in my business life… found I was still seeking God’s direction in my life. This Burning Bush became a defining moment for me, in which, God was sending me a clearly identifiable message; saying… FOLLOW ME. Matthew 4:19 – “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
I’ve had many experiences where Christ was tugging at my heart, and while I felt that I had an open and sincere relationship with Him … still… I never experienced a defining moment. I was, like many, going about my day-to-day journey in survival mode; just trying to be a good guy; and making “no particular impact” on life. I recognize, now, status-quo is not enough, and not what God expects from us. Luke 12:48 tells us – But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
I knew that I’ve given very little back in relationship to what “God has given me.” I decided…things were going to have to change, but I had trouble getting out of the starting gate. That is, until…. my friend, Evangelist Adrian Despres re-introduced me to the Bible verse… Matthew 28:19 – Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Even though I’ve read it often, it seemed to CONNECT with me now… for the first time. This verse provided me with the DEFINING MOMENT, I was seeking. I proceeded to develop a POA (Plan of Action); and utilized the well-known LinkedIn website to provide “business advice and direction,” which I flavored with “the Gospel.” I later moved on and developed my own website…BrOOKS-of-WISDOM, which can be found at www.charlesbrooks.com. Between these two…I now… “Go into all the world and preach the gospel.”
With all this said…. I am not so naive as to believe that thousands, or even hundreds, maybe only a few… will suddenly be affected by my efforts, or my “new-found-commitment.” As of this moment, I would be satisfied if I were to lead just one person to Christ. Could that be you? ….Blessings…cjlb… 2/7/16.
