APPEARANCES: Why are we so often concerned about appearances? Um… especially women. Oops, did I say that? It’s either too long, too short, too tall, too wide, too grey, too ugly, too pretty (what?), too smart, too poor, too rich (what?) too dumb, too this, and too that?
Or, how about too lazy…too fast, or too slow… or maybe, too obsessed with appearances?
If we really care that much about what others think…then, we might get better dividends if we were ‘judged’ by what others might think of our ability… our level of commitment, or skill-sets, maybe our leadership skills, integrity, and morals.
Let us be judged, if we must be judged at all… on our love for our fellow man, our morals, integrity, our commitment to our community, and family…. And to Our Lord Jesus Christ… first and foremost.
We are told in 1 Samuel 16:7 – But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
And then, in James 2:1-5 –My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?
It is often said that appearances can be deceiving. Let us not be accused of being deceitful, too.
