Ok…I admit…I’m NOT one to live in MODERATION. I’d like to think that I am. I try hard to be moderate. But, throughout my life…moderation has not been in my vocabulary. I do everything to excess. I’ve always been told that I didn’t say my first word until I was 3 years old. I’ve often thought that if they knew then, in 1939, what they know today… I would have probably been diagnosed with…who knows what? I’ve also been told, that since that first word…I haven’t SHUT-UP. I promise… I’m SLOW to speak, but when I get started…. (They’re right…), I don’t shut-up.
The opposite of a MODERATION personality, I think could be…an ADDICTIVE personality. I do things to the excess. That’s why, today, I am a TEETOTALER. When exercising, if 10 reps is MODERATE, then I do 20. In walking, if 2 miles is moderate, then I do 4, or 5. I’ve always thought; if something is “really worth doing,” then why not, do a “lot of it?” I like to write…probably 10-15,000 words a week.
I think I’m addicted. I PRAY the same way. I KNOW that God is probably “tired of hearing” from me. I dress the same way. If 5 pairs of shoes is GOOD…then why not have 25, and be BETTER…on and on. I don’t know when to stop. The problem: Just about everything you read; clearly tells you to “do it in MODERATION.” Drinking is ok…just do it in moderation. Maybe “sky-diving” is ok, too, in moderation.
Then, there is “eating.” I’m about 25 pounds overweight; because one piece of desert isn’t good enough for me. Especially on buffets; if there is 5 or 6 different deserts…then, by darn, I’m having all six. Even in dieting… If you’re going to diet, then by darn…DIET. I binge diet…48 hours with NO-FOOD. I’ll go, sometimes, an entire week without eating, except, dry toast and water. I’ve sworn off SWEETS, and haven’t had any form of SUGAR for about one month…and I’ve lost about 15 pounds (I’m going for 25)…Thank you God.
I remember taking Western History in college… the professor told us to answer 10 of the 15 questions…so, thinking that 15 is better than 10; and it’ll give me an opportunity to improve my grade, or at least, show him how SMART I am. Well, I got a ZERO on the test, because I failed to LISTEN. Answer 10 out of 15, he said. I learn quickly. OK…you got the picture. It’s all about “self-control,” or temperance, and believe it or not…FAIRNESS.
Here’s a few thoughts on moderation: Galatians 5:13 – For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only [use] not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. 1 Peter 5:8 – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. Philippians 4:5 – Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord [is] at hand. Ephesians 5:18-20 – And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit. That ought to clear the air.
