Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 13:18-23.
Jesus said to His disciples: “Hear then the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”
May Christ help you, dearest brethren, always to welcome with an eager and thirsting heart the reading of God’s word; then your faithful obedience will fill you with spiritual joy. But if you wish Holy Scripture to bring you sweetness and the divine precepts to profit you as much as they should, then relax from your material preoccupations for a few hours. Read God’s words over again in your house, dedicate yourselves entirely to his mercy. Thus you will succeed in realizing within yourself what is written of the man who is blessed: “meditating on the Law of the Lord day and night” (Ps 1:2) and “Happy are they who observe his decrees, who seek him with all their heart” (Ps 118:2).
Briefly… I’ll repeat a story I’ve told any number of times. I’ve read the Bible through 4 or 5 times…and yes, I know …. That’s not very many. But… I have also been a Bible READER for some 60 years…just not from beginning to end… on a daily basis. My routine was…more on a weekly basis… or ‘whenever’ I got around to it.
My point is THIS. Having read many different verses… many different times, over the years… the TRUE MEANING does not always sink in… just because you read it. I KNOW that is the case for me. I’ve read Matthew 28:19, probably…over the last 60 years…I’m guessing about 100 times. But it was not until about 5 years ago, that the verse ‘finally registered’ with me. Before… I always thought… Jesus was talking to someone else…surely… NOT ME.
It says in Matthew 28:19-20 – Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Now tell me… who would apply that verse to themselves… that is to say… in a SIGNIFICANT manner? I sure didn’t… until about 5 years ago. It finally got through my thick skull…. Jesus was talking to me. Hallelujah! Thanks be to God. I finally got the message. Because… this very verse changed my life… completely. I finally realized that I “was not” adhering to, or abiding by… His instructions. I was IGNORING His WORD. I’m a ‘slow learner,’ but once I catch on… “Katie… bar the door.”
My JOB today… To get OFF of ‘my own PLAN,’ and ON God’s PLAN. Jeremiah 29:11 – I know the plans I have for you,” announces the Lord. “I want you to enjoy success. I do not plan to harm you. I will give you hope for the years to come.
The mere fact that you’re reading this post today, is indicative that I am ‘out and about’ doing the WORK of God… according to His PLAN. That “work” which He had planned for me… when He created ME… In His IMAGE. I’m sharing this story… MY STORY… with you, because I would have NEVER realized (*) what Jesus was asking me, if I had not CONTINUED to READ HIS WORD… over and over… again. And, I want YOU to have the same opportunity. Don’t EVER quite reading God’s WORD.
So, YES… I’m encouraging you…YOU… (Actually… I’m BEGGING you) to do the same thing…and see if it won’t CHANGE your life. God Bless YOU, as you seek HIS WORD…. Cjlb…7/29/2017.
(*) I am indebted to, my friend… Evangelist Adrian Despres… for ‘reminding’ me, again, to read Matthew 28:19-20.
