“…It would do us well to keep our ‘self-adoration’ in check…. less we give satan a ‘foot-hold.'”

Image result for caricature of a 'cocky' guySo…you think you’re somebody now?  Maybe…even a “big-shot.”  At one time, or another… I think, we all experience that sort of feeling.   Um…maybe… not such a good idea.

About 46 years ago, my “then boss”… and I, were in New York City… working on a business deal, and we were walking down 5th Avenue, and 42nd street and he stopped… turned, and said to me…. “Brooks…the problem with you… is that you’ve arrived… and you don’t even know it.” At the time, I took it as “back-handed-compliment” …. but didn’t dwell on it.

It was a few years later that it really sunk into my consciousness, as to exactly… what he was referring to. He meant…to imply… (I believe)… that…  I’ve made a name for myself and I was too naive  to realize it.  I’m pretty fortunate… regarding that type of thinking (I call it… stink’n-think’n) because… for whatever degree of success that God has blessed me with… it has never gone to my head. For some of us…it does.

By its self… it’s not that big of a deal… but when you let your ego, pride, and self-adoration get in the way of reality… then you may have a problem. And, someone, soon, will cut you down to size. Being over-confident, and cocky… too, is not a good mix.

I’ve been bucked to my knees a couple of times, and it’s no fun. Invariably, though…when one gets a “bit too cocky,” then… his… financial, career, and home issues…and sometimes…even, his spiritual life is suddenly… in jeopardy. One or two of these by-product effects… most of us can handle, but when all three hit at the same time, then….WOW…Katie, bar the door.

It’s the cool-hand and level-headed, guy that can pick up the pieces and move on; learning from it all, and developing one’s self… such, that… the consequences will not be duplicated.

We are warned inGenesis 4:7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”   It would do us well to keep our “self-adoration” in check…. less we give satan a “foot-hold.”
