“…It’s the place we go when things aren’t working out just right….”

The Great Pretender…by the Platters in 1956.  I remember it well, and used to fancy myself as being able to sing it with great skill.  Anyway…you may remember some of the lyrics…Oh-oh, yes I’m the great pretender…Pretending that I’m doing well, My need is such I pretend too much….etc.  Well, the story is this….are not we all, guilty of “pretending to do well, when our need is such that we pretend too much?”  For me…and I admit…I’ve pretended too much, over the years.  But, it kind’a like a safety valve, a pacifier, or a security blanket…it’s something that gives us comfort.  It’s the place we go when things aren’t working out just right.  We go there to cool off a bit.  I know that sometimes I get all bent out of shape about some serious business issue, where I think someone has “wronged me,” and I feel like picking up the phone and cussing the guy out; but what I’ve trained myself to do is…I write a letter to the guy, telling him what I think about him, and his insults to me.  I sit on it a few days, and think about it….all the while… cooling off.  Then I delete the letter, store it in my memory bank…and move on to the next fire.  One could say that I’m just pretending.  Then there’s the time when we run into an “old co-worker,” and he inquires about the latest big deal we’re involved in.  You know…the one that’s “just about to close.”  It should be signed by Monday….but Monday NEVER comes.  None of us like admitting defeat; as it takes something out of us that is very hard to replace….and that’s called “self-confidence.”  So, PRETENDING sometimes…kind’a of gets us through the rough times.  It’s not all that bad to pretend.  It’s like anything else in life…just don’t over-do it.  We all have to sit down and do a reality-check.  Yes, I’m the great pretender, Just laughin’ and gay like a clown, I seem to be what I’m not, you see I’m wearing my heart like a crown.   Proverbs 6:16-19 – “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swiftin running to mishief,  A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”  Hebrews 13:18 – “We wish to conduct ourselves honestly in all things.”  …Blessings… 3/25/14
