We’ve all heard stories about the couple who no-one had ever heard argue, or raise their voice to one another…could it be because they argued only in private (as it should be)? I’ve heard of them, but NEVER have I met them… or anyone like them. A friend of some 40 years tells me, still, that he never heard his Mother raise her voice to anyone.
Do you know anyone whom never told a lie, cursed, or was deceptive? Do you know anyone who NEVER cheated in any form, or fashion? Know anyone who hasn’t embellished the truth? I know….personally…people who have committed every sin known to mankind, including murder.
It’s true… these indiscretions encompass several people, to accommodate all the sin I mention. But, factually, the guy who was the murderer, except for that terrible occurrence… is one of the nicest guys you’d want to meet. I’ve even met some pretty rough characters in my…ug…almost 77 years…including a few… ministers of the cloth.
BUT, truly I say unto you…. I’ve NEVER met anyone, in whom, I want to emulate… not even one. Sure, there have been some people who have excelled in certain areas of their life…that I wish that I had their skills…so I might accomplish similar feats. But to emulate…No No! The lone exception… would be Jesus Christ… and I know Him… only, in my heart.
I pray every day that I might be “more Christ-like.” But, just last week… I realized that that would include a “lot of pain… and suffering… and heartbreak.” Such things that I just don’t want in my life…yet… I pray for it. While I don’t want to have the same “pains and sufferings” that Christ endured… I KNOW that it is “part and parcel” of following Him….like it, or not.
We are told in 1 Peter 4:12-13 – Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree that you share (in) the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing; so that also at the revelation of His glory, you may rejoice with exultation.
God does not expect perfection from us, as His son, Jesus, died for our sins, so that we might have “life-ever-lasting” with Him. God does, however…expect our conversion (to convert from our sinful ways)…and our atonement. 1Matthew 7:1 Judge not, that you be not judged.
So… who do you, really, want to emulate?
