“…Loving myself is tantamount to being obsessed with one’s self….”

“L-O-V-E…is a many splendored thing.”  A movie that came out in 1955, starring William Holden and Jennifer Jones.  What a combination.  Today, everything is about love, and SELF.  We’re told by the LOVE-DOCTORS that we must first learn to love ourselves, to better appreciate ourselves, in order to pass that love on to others.  Then, in Mark 12:31 …“Love thy neighbor as thyself….”  I think the use of love is a bit too romanticized; I’m all for love… it’s just that if I loved my neighbor as myself, then my neighbor is getting the short-end.  I like who I am, but I just don’t think of it in terms of LOVE.  I have some appreciation for myself; I have confidence in myself; I feel good about myself.  Is this LOVE?  Don’t think so.  Loving myself is tantamount to being obsessed with one’s self.  I’m pretty, I’m handsome, I’m strong, I’m the best.  I look at myself in a more casual manner.  I simply – care about myself.   I think loving my wife, children, and family is putting them first…then, my neighbor comes in somewhere
down the line.  I just don’t fit into the equation.  And, then, there’s God, and His only begotten Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. We’d like to think that God comes first and foremost, in fact, most of us would say He does.  But do our actions speak in favor of that?  Too often, God comes in last.  Here’s an easy test:  Come Sunday, when it’s raining outside, you don’t feel good (um…you don’t love yourself), too tired, Saturday night football is taking its toll, forgot to get gas, forgot the dry-cleaning, etc… what to do?  Solution:  Watch Church on TV (don’t fall asleep).  There you go…God is “ousted again.”  The person who puts God first, will get their lazy tail up; get the wife and  kids going, and spring for the nearest Church.  That’s putting God first!  I’m not sitting in judgment, rather, I’m
simply saying what we must do, if we are to put God first.  Leviticus 23:3  “There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a sabbath to the LORD.  I stopped counting at about 30 different verses, where this is addressed ….how plain can it get?   Blessings…cjlb…3/8/14
