When it is said….”I’m a pretty good guy,” or, “he’s a pretty nice fellow.” I would then ask: to whom are we comparing ourselves, or that person, with? Is the fellow we are comparing our self with… a popular celebrity? Or maybe, a renowned politician? Is he on equal footing as ourselves? When, you have the comparison of one fellow against, say, a popular, yet controversial, business leader; then what is the controversial business leader known for…such that someone would want to emulate, or be compared against? There are certain “so-called-POPULAR” media people who many wish to be like, and consider it to be an honor to be compared to. Yet, in reality, they lead totally corrupt lives. Our “worldly standards,” have a lot to be desired….when we want to be compared to today’s popular crowd.
Do these “renowned, popular, controversial, celebrities”… lead lives, such that we want to be like them, or for our children to emulate them? This would be doubtful. Call me judgmental….so be it. For me, I would want to be compared with someone who “puts his family and God…FIRST…in their lives.” Someone whose codes-of-life are above reproach.
Unfortunately, Most of us, think in “worldly terms,” rather than “heavenly, or spiritual terms,” so, if you must, than compare me with the MORALS of Billy Graham; the CHARITIABLNESS of Mother Theresa; the ETHICS of my Dearest Wife.; the POLITICS of Ronald Reagan; the SKILLSETS of Edison and Franklin; the GOOD LOOKS of Clark Gable and Paul Newman; the HUMBLNESS of Pope Francis; the ENTREPRENURSHIP of Steve Jobs; the RESOURCES of Bill Gates; the TACTICS of General Patton; the HEALTH of Jack LaLanne; the HUMOR of Bob Hope; the LOVE (of God) to Joseph, son of Jacob; the STRENGTH of Sampson; the WISDOM of Solomon; and the RIGHTEOUSNESS of Jesus Christ. Compare me with those who “rank higher than me, in all respects.”
We are told in Galatians 6:4 – But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. And 2 Corinthians 10:10-30 tell us – Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when absent, such persons we are also in deed when present. For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding. But we will not boast beyond our measure, but within the measure of the sphere which God apportioned to us as a measure, to reach even as far as you.
And as for the “real me,” I am HAPPY with myself…just as I am, …..I don’t want to be anyone else. None of these comparisons do I care about….. As I pray , only, that RIGHTEOUSNESS is within my reach. Thanks be to God. ….Blessings…cjlb…2/28/15
