“…Moving over,” sometimes, is just as important as “moving up….”

SampleMoving over, sometimes, is just as important as “moving up.” It all goes back to having a POA…Plan of Action. Listen to me….without a specific POA, as a future Leader…you’re sucking air.  Doomed.  Bouncing around…day-to-day…year-to-year…without a POA is a dead-end-career in the making.  As I began my career in 1960; I was going the “national company” route; I goal was to be a “big fish in a big pond.”  In 1968, I was making $13K per year, good benefits, Division Accounting Supervisor, and Acting Division Chief Accountant.  I turned down a job to move across the state, as a Division Chief Accountant, as moving was not in my POA.   It was a “career-killer” to turn down promotions; so I took a job with a very small family-owned appliance distributor, as Corporate Comptroller and Credit Manager….at the same salary.  Here’s my point. I wanted the title of CORPORATE COMTROLLER.  I stayed in that job for 6-7 months.   I didn’t like the job, and it was a dead-end job…but I was Corporate Comptroller…and it didn’t require a salary cut.  The next stop was Assistant Controller of a state-wide liquor distributor, family owned, still at the same salary.  These all appear to be lateral moves, and to an outsider looking in…they were.  But in just one year I was promoted to Corporate Controller, with good benefits, a company car…and within another year, I had more than doubled my salary.  At this point in my career; I had not even graduated from college, and was approaching 31 years old, with 3 children.   Just after graduating, I made Vice-President & Controller, along with a very competitive pay increase.   By 1973.  I had become a “big-fish” in a small pond.  I realized that it was time to make a major, and drastic, change in my POA.  I had to re-configure my career into something where I could “build equity.”  REAL ESTATE.  It was my accounting/finance/banking experience that made the transition a reality.  I used “that” as my entrée.  Even though I took a 30% salary cut;  my next move was VP and General Manager of a major Real Estate Development firm.  Within a year, I was a Junior Partner.  Don’t be fooled, though, a junior partner is like owning 25% of nothing.  However, it served its purpose, and my income soon tripled, and by 1983, I was ready to “strike-out-on-my-own.”   Over a 23 year career-span, my income had increased 1300 percent.  Then, from 1984-90; I designed, built, developed, and operated 3 motels, a hotel, 3 restaurants, and a number of office buildings.  I continued to grow, career wise, and after many wise investments… I retired in 1997 from the day-to-day grind.  Over the last 17 years, I continued to make wise investments, and have been BLESSED beyond belief.  This story tells us that lateral moves can, with proper planning, become career opportunities.  It is also intended to show, in some detail, that success is the end-result for those committed to hard work, good ethical standards, not taking “no” for an answer, living by the Golden Rule, putting God FIRST, then FAMILY…and by God’s Grace… anyone can achieve the American Dream.    As Paul says in 2nd Timothy 4:7-8 – I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing. It is hoped that this narration will provide HOPE, ENCOURAGEMENT, and with the Grace of God…YOU can win that race. .….Blessings…cjlb…9/14/14.
