Leadership TRANSPARENCY: The idea of being honest and open in all that you do. I’ve always been a “lay it the table” kind of guy…. Calling a spade a spade. Simply speaking… I callz it the way I seez it. I admit that my style usually “rubs people the wrong say” …but at the same time…I’ve NEVER wanted anyone to have to “read between the lines.”
A good Leader should be transparent… I was transparent when no one knew what the word meant. One’s “followers” should never have to contemplate as to where they stand with the Leader. And, yes, there are times when feelings are hurt, but because I am so emphatic… and passionate… in all that I do…. sometimes, feelings are hurt; even my own. But then… the Corporate World is not a place for people with tender feelings, is it?
As a point of clarification…YES, there is a time when ‘keeping information’ close to your chest is a necessary part of the leadership process. By that, I mean to say, a good leader is not going to outline his entire plan of action to everyone… every time. There are times when the leader is dealing with very sensitive matters that have to be ‘given-out’ in doses.
And sometimes… there is a ‘mole in the works.’ If your leadership role is dealing with… say… scientific formulas…then, maybe it would be better for ‘certain people’ to have ‘just portions’ of the formula. We all have seen where ‘formula’s’ have been mysteriously leaked, lost, or oops…STOLEN. Take for an example…a new car design, or a new ‘cell-phone’ design …which has to be kept under the wraps.
I once knew of a particular leader who ‘allowed certain information’ to be leaked… that was totally false…just to throw the opposition, or competition… off balance. This type of strategy would be typical when he knew there was someone in the organization who was ‘feeding information’ to the competition.
With all this being said… overall, I am a believer in ‘putting the cards on the table.” I believe in having a plan of action that is conveyed… clearly…to all the team players. In this manner… everyone would have a clear understanding of their particular role… how their particular expertise… while a link… is intricacy important to the completed chain.
The good news here… is God is the Leader of all LEADERS; the motivator of all MOTIVATORS; the teacher of all TEACHERS; and the inspiration of all the FAITHFUL. Transparency is God’s trademark. He leaves nothing UN-SAID. He leaves nothing to CHANCE. No one has to ‘read between the lines with God.
In John 14:7-9… Jesus said, “‘If you had known me, you would have known my Father also; and from now on you know him and have seen him. Phillip said to Him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known me, Phillip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father?’”
Jesus, the transparent man, allows us to see, through His life, faith, hope and love, the eternal principles of God. Looking upon Jesus we see the enduring values of His Father in heaven—mercy, acceptance and forgiveness. All can be seen through Jesus, the transparent man. Jesus allows us to gaze transparently upon the glory of God. Jesus’ transparent life attracted attention. The light of heaven shining through Him drew thousands to follow Him.
This is all that is expected of us… to believe in Him, to follow Him, and to Love Him.
