“…Our markings are not just what we do…that leaves an impression; but also…what we don’t do…”

20131213_170939BOOK MARKINGS… Have you ever read a book, or article, and notice where      the previous reader had made numerous underlining’s, or made notes in the margin? Such a “marking” is an indication that the reader considers the word, phrase, or sentence…to be important to remember, or refer back to.

Such markings will not only reveal what the person thought to be important, but ALSO, it gives a glimpse into his own inter-being. Such a revelation might be, at some future point, an embarrassment…or, even… a compliment. Be CAUTIOUS, therefore, that such markings don’t send a message that might come back to haunt you in some manner.

We humans are leaving “our markings” around all the time. A few examples…might be: the wearing of a tattoo; in-appropriate language; improper dressing; the type of people that we associate; the “hang-out’s” that we might frequent; even our type of employment…or something, seemingly simple… like bad table manners.

Our markings are not just what we do…that leaves an impression; but also…what we don’t do. A few examples…might be: supporting our family as we should; educating our children as necessary; setting the appropriate example for our children, spouse, and friends; and another important …and often neglected responsibility…is, our …“spiritual life.”

What kind of “bookmark” are we leaving? Is there any evidence of a “marking?”  Have we left an impression…good or bad? Anything? Can anyone tell if we have a relationship with God, or not? Or, possibly…is there more evidence, which suggests that we are following the “more worldly aspects of life”…with no evidence of a spiritual status?

I am reminded of today’s Gospel found in Luke 13:26-27 – Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ And he will answer, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers.’ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves are thrown out.…

So, then, what’s going on here? Possibly they were “leaving the wrong markings.” An example might be… leaving church early, or even…coming in late. Another might be…skipping church all together…leaving an indelible marking on our children. Or, possibly… failing to feed the hungry, cloth the poor, or providing for the homeless…or better yet….taking care of the elderly.

So…what kind of markings are we (that would be you and me) leaving?
