Why is it done, and for what good reason? For birds, it might be for safer flight, whereas, for we, the more intellectual…humans…well, it might be for purposes of ego, and building self-esteem. We humans, for the most part, all, want to look nice, putting our best foot forward; trying to make the best first impression.
But wait… there are exceptions, i.e. Steve Jobs, who it is said, went to interviews either bare-footed, or in flip-flops. (Sorry, I would not consider interviewing anyone under such conditions…Steve, or no Steve….sorry Steve). While preening has its purpose for animals… for humans… it may lead to a sense of falsehood, misrepresentation, and window dressing of the truth.
Or, it may be that we just want to camouflage who we really are, or what we really represent…. Maybe cause of a poor self-opinion, or for even…devious reasons, or ulterior motives. We should all be reminded that satan buys his clothes at the same store as we do.
What is it that “they say”… even a pig looks good with lipstick? These days of “high-technology”… anyone can “become…someone else,” not just in looks, but worse yet….identity-theft.
Using myself as an example… regardless of who I may want to be…try to be…or temporarily become; sometime… sooner, than later, I will have to return to who I really am…and bear the consequences. It will make not a “particle of difference”… rather it’s a career objective, some kind of personal pursuit, sporting event, family matter… or, a spiritual reckoning… the real Charles Brooks will be revealed….ouch! And, Katie… bar the door… I pray to the Lord God… that I am READY.
In Matthew 23: 1-3 we are told: Now Jesus turned to address his disciples, along with the crowd that had gathered with them. “The religion scholars and Pharisees are competent teachers in God’s Law. You won’t go wrong in following their teachings on Moses. But be careful about following them. They talk a good line, but they don’t live it. They don’t take it into their hearts and live it out in their behavior. It’s all spit-and-polish veneer.
