“…REMEMBER: Stay in your own backyard..”

A FEW TIPS on starting up a small business:

WHO should you HIRE? “Hire the best you can afford. Hire for a “specific” job. If it’s bricklaying…then hire the best bricklayer….if he’s a SMART bricklayer, too, all the better. If you want a rocket scientist…than hire the best rocket scientist, and “also” the smartest your money can buy. All of this “will vary” based on the position and all of its corresponding complexities.

I would never play tennis, golf, or whatever….with anyone whom I can beat. I can’t learn from anyone, unless he’s better in his particular field, then me.  Hire someone that “the rest of us” can learn from.

I’ve been in all kinds of working environments, and the best environment is: Own it yourself, with no partners. Generally… partnerships are “dead-end” streets. A bad partner is no different than a “bad employee,” or a “bad marriage.”   Also, partnerships are “hard to get out of.”

Get FREE-of-DEBT as soon as possible. Your probably thinking that would be impossible…. ”not so.” It all depends on “how big” you want to be. Being “in debt,” simply means that you “have a SILENT partner.” Where did you get your “start-up money?” Friends? Family? Bank? Whoever you “owe money to,” is a “silent partner.” When the $$$ become due…they’re the BOSS…not you. If you want to be in-charge of your own destiny…than get out of debt.

Take for an example… if you’re in the motel business, and have made enough money to “pay off the motel,” and instead, you think you want to “invest” in another motel. Think again! Instead, wait until you have the “cash” to build the next motel… and pay cash. Then repeat it, again, and again. I know it works, because… I’ve done it. But that’s another story for another time.

Treat your Customers with respect, fairness, and honesty. Treat your Customers just like you would treat you own Mother. Your Customers “pay your bills,” and the old cliché …the customer is always right… to me..is TRUE, no matter if they’re RIGHT… or WRONG.

If business is GOOD, and you want to EXPAND… and, REMEMBER: Stay in your own backyard? Stay in familiar territory. Don’t venture into someone else’s territory… when there is plenty of OPPORTUNITY in your own back yard…. Stay there!  This was a “good lesson” that legitimate business learned from the MAFIA.

Also, once you think “you’re the smartest;” then be careful…cus’…someone’s on the sideline…just waiting to “put-you-in-your-place.” Don’t do anything STUPID! My life-long motto is: Don’t smoke, don’t drink, don’t cuss, and don’t play-around-with-women. All …will get you in trouble…or maybe, even, kill you.

Remember, too: God is the Great Teacher, Leader, and Motivator…and also…the SMARTEST. Consider God to be the CHAIRMAN of the BOARD.  In the long run… all that you NEED to KNOW is in the BUSINESS MANUAL…. Known as the BIBLE. View the Bible as a playbook for your team. It informs them of what you expect, and what they can expect from you. It clears the air in a lot of situations that could be confusing. If used properly, the Bible can be a catalyst that might keep your people from going down the “primrose path.”

Deuteronomy 8:18 – But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.  All of our skills and special talents that we use in our business are “gifts to us from God. He gives us the ability to make money and cut deals.

I Thessalonians 5:16-19 – Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances; this is the will of God for your life. It is important to have a prayerful life as an entrepreneur; as it helps you get through those days that don’t go our way.   We need to thank God, even when we don’t win that big deal. God will protect us, so “Always be grateful.”

Blessings…. cjlb…. 9/4/15.
