“… this fellow was concerned about his identity, his faith, and his future…”

20140906_152459He was fresh out of graduate school, facing a career full of challenges, and wondering about his future. He was concerned about his personal identity, Christian faith, and finding meaning in life. The “he” could be anyone… you…me… or the guy next door. I just wonder, though, how many of “us” actually take the time to reflect on these types of issues. I know, in my own case…. I did not.  I got married in 1959, just 19 years old, one year out of high school, with NO plan of action. The only thing I knew, was….I wanted to get married. What???  Was I crazy?  Just nineteen, and she was “just eighteen.”  Yes sir’ree Bob… we were crazy. Yet 55 years latter… we’re still married (by the GRACE of God), and still crazy. But thinking about my faith, identity, “meaning” in life….NOT by any chance was such on my mind. First job….60 big ones….NO, not $60K per year…$60 per week. My bride made $55 per week, and we did pretty good considering.  We bought 3 grocery bags each week for about $15.00….and, NEVER went without.  If we wanted something…we SAVED our money, and bought it. And over the last 55 years, with little exception ( house mortgage) we NEVER had any personal debt.  I NEVER even had a credit card until I was 40 years old.  Who needed one of those?  But here is the more important point… this fellow was concerned about his identity, his faith, and his future. There’s not many who have gotten to that point, even when they’re hugging 30 years.  So…I’m thinking…Identity…meaning…who is he…who do people perceive him to be…what does he stand for?  I wear a “chaplains cross” on my coat lapel, and one on my cap (I wear a Greek Sailor Cap), and have had hundreds of people ask me….”Are you a minister?”  No…but I do wear my FAITH on my shoulder (sort of speaking).  I WANT people to KNOW who I am… what I stand for…what my IDENTITY is.  I don’t want any QUESTION about who I represent.  My FUTURE, and MEANING in life, is built around GOD!  All other life issues surround God.  One doesn’t have to go to my extreme, but find middle ground that one can settle on, that will be pleasing to God.   You don’t have to be like me, of course, but make a conscious CHOICE to be God-like.  Psalm 34:6-8 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him,  And saved him out of all his troubles.  The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them. O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!…Blessings…9/7/14.  This posting is dedicated to my Dearly departed Mother…Mildred Norma Kohlhepp Lehman Brooks.  9/7/1918> 6/16/1973, born this date…96 years ago.  God Bless you Mother.
