REASON: Ok…so… Let’s be reasonable. This is one of my favorite phrases…It’s so… “All-encompassing.” The thing about being “reasonable,” is that it is a wonderful attribute, for ANYONE, be they in business, social setting, a family circumstance…or even a religious situation. Being able to “exercise reasonableness,” is a SKILL that we all should emulate.
Even God thought it was worthwhile, so He included it in the Bible. ISAIAH 1:18 – “Come now, let us REASON together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.
But… to exercise REASON, is not something that we humans do well…as we, seemingly, are too emotional; especially about half of us. Which half is up for speculation? But for those who do well, in reasoning, are much more logical; more grounded, and, I believe, more intellectual; which is a trait of successful leaders, and one that will sustain their leadership status for an extended period of time.
Ask yourself….”Am I being reasonable?” Some 40 years ago, my eldest son was told to be home by 11PM. He was about 10 minutes late, and I took away his car privileges for 30 days. He took it on the chin, because he knew I was a “strong disciplinarian.”
” But… the next morning, he “calmly” told me that he “felt that I was being a bit unreasonable,” as the crime didn’t seem to fit the punishment. I agreed with him, and lifted the punishment to “time served.” I was proud of him for coming to his own defense; not just because he was “more right than I was,” but because he handled it as a seasoned adult.
My son, at age 16, taught me one of the more important lessons I’ve ever learned… to exercise REASON.
