HIGH ACHIEVER: Most of us will NEVER be recognized for those skills, talents, and achievements that we have worked months and years to prefect, and achieve. Most of these awards are available only to those who ‘apply for such recognition’ …or have been ‘recommended’ by their peer group. Let’s not fool ourselves. EXCELLENCE is not applied for. Excellence is a SKILL achievement… that is EARNED.
We’re all familiar with mail order degrees… available for ‘just a few dollars.’ I remember some 30 years ago, a local fellow ‘got religion’ and ordered his Masters, and PhD in Theology, and called himself Dr. Smith. He bought time on the radio and put himself out on the airwaves as an accomplished evangelist. What he had to say was sensible enough… but his lack of ‘skill-set’ was deafening. EXCELLENCE cannot be purchased.
Speaking for myself, I can say that I’ve worked long and hard… to accomplish…well, ‘whatever.’ I have no AWARDS, no ACCOLADES, no CERTIFICATIONS, and NO peer RECOGNIZATIONS. What I do have, though…. is the recognition of GOD. God knows who I am; He knows what I’ve accomplished; He knows what I’ve done, what I didn’t do, and what I should have done…but didn’t. He knows the number of hairs on my head.
And I KNOW that He LOVES me. I KNOW that He died on the cross for my sins, so that I might have ‘life-ever-lasting.’ He KNOWS that I’ve CONFESSED my SINS, and that I’ve REPENTED. I have a PhD. in knowing how to do everything WRONG, then, by the ‘Grace of God’… learning the ‘right-way’… such that I’ve redirected my life…to doing God’s will.
God has ‘given all of us’… those skill-sets necessary to achieve EXCELLENCE. We were made in His Image, and He has laid out our future for us. In keeping with the biblical goal of spiritual growth and greater levels of maturity, we often find in Scripture the call to EXCELL in Christian character, especially in expressing LOVE to one another.
We are told in Philippians 1:9-10 – And this I pray, that your love may abound (EXCELL) still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Then, in… 2 Corinthians 8:7 it says – But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, and in all eagerness and in the love from us that is in you—make sure that you excel in this act of kindness too. Further, we are told in 1 Thessalonians 3:12 – And may the Lord cause you to increase and abound (EXCELL) in love for one another and for all, just as we do for you, so that your hearts are strengthened in holiness to be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. And finally, we find in 1 Thessalonians 4:1 – Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that, as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God, that you may EXCEL still more.
We cannot go wrong…when we have God leading us to EXCELLENCE. With God on our side, then … AWARDS of excellence are ‘found in heaven.’
