Martin Luther changed religion forever when he posted his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg on 31 October 1517, sparking the Reformation. That was “just one man.” He did this without the benefit of telephone, telegraph, television, or the internet; using just the “power of one.” Then, think of the impact of John the Baptizer…just one guy. And then, there was Madalyn Murray O’Hair, who single-handedly, stopped “organized prayer” in public schools. Just one person.
Of course, while it was built on lies, there is the abortion case, Roe vs. Wade, which by its action has been responsible for approximately 56 million abortions…of human life. Don’t forget about HITLER…just one person; and look what he did. Of course, he had a partner….satan.
Then, we have the most important example of the POWER-of-ONE…the birth, crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ….resulting in about one-third of the world’s inhabitants being Christian. In more modern-day terms, we have people like Henry Ford, the Wright Brothers, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs; not to mention earlier inventions that changed our life-styles forever. Basically…all of them, changed the world….. with the POWER-of-ONE individual.
The internet has given us the ability to control election outcomes, produce instant millionaires, and making obscure people famous for all of time. All of these tools are available to each ONE of us. Each ONE of us has the ability to change the world. Man-made tools, together with the “gifts” we receive from God, give each of us “un-told” abilities, and skill-sets, to change and influence the world. Can we, then, not use this same “Power-of-One” for…..GOOD? We use the “power-of-one,” in most cases…for NO-GOOD reason. Meaning that we MISS-USE our power.
It starts at home. Are we using our “power-of-one” to have proper influence over our children, our family, our friends, our co-workers, and society as a whole? Do we ever offer to help our “neighbor?” Do we help the elderly, the lame, the clothes-less, the poor, the homeless, and those without the “basic” necessities of life? Here’s a good one….do we ever offer to take someone to Church? Do we ever volunteer our time, talent, and resources to help….well…anyone?
Just recently, I had an individual approach me from LinkedIn, who implied that (s)he was scared to talk about God in an open forum….for fear of losing their job. Is God so far removed from industry that we cannot talk “out-in-the-open?”
I’m just “one-person.” It is my hope and prayer that this approach, that I employ on LinkedIn, and my own website: BrOOKS-of-WISDOM (found at www.charlesbrooks.com) has just such an influence….the POWER-of-ONE. We are told in Isaiah 6:8 – “Also, I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ’Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ’Here am I! Send me.”
So, you see…. as it is often said: It’s not so much our ability, as our availability. We need to ask ourselves….Am I willing to be an instrument of His Peace, and a conduit of His Love. Are we available? It only takes one person to start a fire. Anyone can do it…Any “one-person” can talk about God. Any one-person can be a POWER-of-ONE.
