What’s in a NAME? Names are more important as we get older. When I was 6 or 7, some red-headed-kid called me an SOB; and his name was Chuck. I didn’t like him or his name. I could not bring myself to call my first born, Charles, so … with a bit of reluctance… Chuck it was.
I’ve had my share of last names, as well…first… there was Lehman (the name to which I was born), then Barrie, Lehman (again), and finally… Brooks. I thought that I was being adopted but they were just changing my last name to suit themselves; NEVER serving a useful purpose. Brooks stuck.
I lived with my last father, Henry Brooks, for 9 years, and he left a good, and lasting, impression on me, along with his good name; for which I am proud to have had, for some 65 years. Aside from the fact that I don’t think birth names should be subject to change, ever… mine was, and I’ve tried to bring both HONOR and GRACE, to it and to those “other Brooks’ to which I share their name.
My own children, and grandchildren have followed me in that journey; all making us proud to be a Brooks. As we make our journey through the stops, twists, and turns of life, we should be aware of the NAME that we leave behind; a birth name, or not, always follows you.
Our name is our legacy and our reputation. We are told in Proverbs 22:1-2 – A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all.
As we are only moments away from the beginning of a NEW YEAR, let us take a moment… and remember what is said in Matthew 1:23-24 – Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet (Isaiah) “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.” And, again, in Isaiah 9:6 …And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Considering the importance that God placed on the Name of His Son, it would seem that our own names have meaning…such that we don’t “just stumble” into them without purpose. Neither do we “just stumble” into the New Year “all by ourselves,” as these TRANSFORMATIONS are done only with, and by, the GRACE of God….Our Lord Jesus Christ. We can do nothing on our own.
Jeremiah 1:5 – Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.
2016 gives us, each, a chance for “new hopes and new beginnings”….Ephesians 4:22-24 – You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
And, as we begin the changes in our life for 2016, we are told in Colossians 3:9-10- Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
Happy New Year’s…and God’s many….Blessings….cjlb….1/01/2016
