I learned this early in my career. I didn’t know, then, that there was a term for it, but today it’s called the FORBIDEN-G’S: Gold, Glory, and Girls (or guys). Let’s set aside the moral aspects of this, if that’s even possible… When one gets their priorities confused; it will come back to haunt them, sooner than later. By that I mean… to confuse what is “really important,” verses the things that just make us feel good.
I’ve NEVER seen it fail. Doing it (that would be anything that has “me” in it) just for the money, or just for the glory, or heaven forbid…just for a girl… spells doom, and often permanent DOOM. Remember Jack Welch of GE. If it can happen to the Chairman of GE, then it can happen to anyone. Remember, more recently…Alabama Governor Robert Bentley….sure to be doomed. When “you’re in it for …S-E-L-F”…you’re doomed!
Certainly… all “junior management” people should be subjected to the same penalties as their senior management counterparts; but too often, Seniors are given the benefit of the doubt…and Juniors are given the “door.” Choosing Gold over a “regular pay-check” and Glory over a “tad of humility,” and the girl over “good sense,” will always come back to haunt you. Consider General David Howell Petraeus and President Jefferson Clinton…one considered a “hero” and the other a “deflowered-clown.” And, school is not out, yet, on Hillary Rodman Clinton.
The sudden rise to fame, and corresponding celebrity…not to mention all the “big bucks” is almost always too much too handle…except for the likes of Harry Truman. President Harry Truman drove himself back to Missouri, along with an Army retirement of a tad over $13,000.00 per year. Bill Clinton went into office worth about…hum…$35,000, and now… reportedly worth about $250 million. Obama went into office worth about $2 million, and will come out of office worth about $20 million (just for starters). How does that happen?
But history tells us that “they are not alone.”
There was a biblical fellow we all know as King David. And, the many who have followed him… putting GOLD, GLORY, and GIRLS … ahead of good sense and eternal salvation. We are told in 2 Corinthians 5:10 (or for some Two Corinthians)… For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. We are further cautioned in 1 Corinthians 10:31 – So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. …
I might add, too, that falling for the “forbidden-G’s” is not…always…something that “just happens” over night…rather, more likely…it’s like “gaining weight.” Before you realize it… you’ve been “snake-bit.”. My advice? Be ALERT!
