DECISIONS – DECISIONS: Think about this….the decisions that we make today….invariably, WILL affect us for the rest of our lives…..for good or for bad. That said, then, we must make sure that we don’t screw our lives up with the effects of bad decisions. Almost ALWAYS, others are effected by our decisions…. Not just ourselves.
You’ve heard the saying…”we can pay the Piper now, or later,” …either way …WE PAY. You’ve heard the other one, too…”what goes around…comes around.” We don’t escape our “just due.”
So, don’t rely totally on your own ability to handle such important tasks… LISTEN to what your Spouse has to say (as difficult as that may seem), your Minister, your Mentor, your Parents, and that inter-voice that keeps you on the right road. I have clear recollection as to the times that my bride CAUTIONED me…not to do this…or that. And I should have listened closer to the “wise one.” Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Also…be on the look-out for the “slimy-one.” The o’snake has a way of getting a “foot-hold” on all the important decisions. It’s up to US to make sure that he doesn’t. We’re told in Ephesians 4:26-27- “Do not let the sun go down while you are angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” Every Christian, at one time or another, is engaged in a life-defining battle with satan. The “slippery-one” is our “adversary” (1 Pet 5:8), and he has crafted elaborate “wiles” (Eph 6:11) and “devices” (2 Cor 2:11) to gain ground and win us to his side. The Apostle Paul warns us: “do not give the devil a foothold”-don’t make it any easier on him!
The smallest bit of ground, the tiniest foothold, the briefest opportunity is to be zealously guarded against falling into satan’s grasp. In this text, unresolved anger that continues to poison our minds and jells into bitterness and malice gives the devil the opening he seeks. We can COUNTER satan’s efforts as shown in Romans 13-14 – “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.”
Flirting with satan, or cozying up to temptation to see how close we can get …gives ground to the devil, and dramatically increases the chances that we will fall into his grasp. I can speak from experience… years back, I used to walk the edge… just daring satan to tempt me… I ALWAYS won…. But there came a day…he beat me. It took me months to escape his grip. I remember the “day of reconciliation” very clearly… I said to the devil….”Go to HELL satan… I’m no-longer your SLAVE.”
He…. satan will give you all the rope… or the room to maneuver that you need… he wants you to get “over-confident” (as I did), so that he lets you think he’s forgotten about you…. Then, all of a sudden… satan will sneak up behind you and ATTACK… then you belong to him. Don’t FLIRT with the devil. We have the POWER to resist the devil. “Do not give a foothold” …emphasizes that this is something that each of us have the POWER to control.
The devil can only come as close as we allow him. In James 4:7, it tells us… “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” Though powerful and cunning, the devil can never control our will, or force disobedience on us…. We have to be a “willing participant.” He only flees from those who have the courage, and FAITH in Jesus, to resist him and turn to God’s promise and power.
Tell him….”Go to HELL satan… I’m no-longer your SLAVE.”
