ACCEPTING STATUS-QUO: Ever wonder why a certain friend or co-worker seems to have it all together? Well adjusted….yet struggling financially; …not fashionable – yet neat and clean; family education is clearly important…but he struggles to send them to the best schools. He’s recognized as an un-official leader, yet receives no reward. In spite of the difficulties…he is clearly happy and well adjusted; accepted by all of his peers and co-workers. So, you wonder what’s going on with this guy.
How can this guy be so happy…yet seemingly…going nowhere fast? Look for these signs: Accepting – yet giving; patient – yet moderately competitive; charitable – yet still shrewd; hardworking – yet relaxed. Happy, yet a bit stoic. He believes in God – but doesn’t promote his belief.
People like this are “just satisfied” with their “lot in life.” They don’t want to make waves, hurt feelings, or show too much aggression. He’ll get the occasional increase in salary, but would NEVER ask for a raise. He’s easily satisfied, a team player, and doesn’t “openly complain.”
I have just such a friend. He works HARD, is very HONEST, is KNOWLEDGABLE, and FAIR…. But one lacking characteristic is that he LACKS the “killer instinct.” He could NEVER be a MAJOR PLAYER. But, yet, everyone wants him on their TEAM. He’s good at “filling in between the cracks.”
You find people like this in all companies. They’re considered the “glue that holds and everybody together.” They can put a fire out, but can’t prevent one from starting. They can help “solve a problem;” but can’t “prevent the problem from happening.” They’re consistent, dependable, reliable, and yet, demand little in return. Management love these guys, but will take advantage of them in a “heartbeat;” because they know they won’t ever leave the company. They’re always an “Assistant VP, but never a Vice President. Their “true value” is never recognized until it’s too late. This fellow will always come in second place….never first.
God is expecting more from us that this “status-quo.” He wants us to be a “warrior,” just like His Son…Jesus Christ. Say what? Sure Jesus was loving, forgiving, and compassionate; but not always, particularly…. A nice Guy. In fact, He was rather intolerant. We saw in John 2:15, where Jesus turned to violence. How did Jesus respond to the “money-changers” in the temple? He wasn’t polite about it. He fashioned a whip and physically drove the merchants away. He turned over tables and shouted. He caused a scene. Jesus Christ called the Scribes and Pharisees snakes and vipers. He labels them murderers and blind guides, and ridicules them publicly [Matthew 23:33]. He undermines their authority. He insults and castigates them.
Because we are made in the “image of Jesus (God),” then we are EXPECTED to ACT like Jesus, and become a “warrior for Christ.” We are told in (my favorite verse) in Matthew 28:19 – Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This kind of action is not for a “timid man,” but rather….a Warrior for Christ.
Moses’ Song of Deliverance found in Exodus 15:2-4 – “The LORD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will extol Him. “The LORD is a warrior; The LORD is His name. “Pharaoh’s chariots and his army He has cast into the sea; And the choicest of his officers are drowned in the Red Sea.
Are you a “warrior for Christ?” …….Blessings….cjlb…7/3/15
