“…if he’s not able to PROJECT… ‘I’m paying attention’… type of presence…then he might be counted…OUT…”

Image result for caricature of man "looking down," while walking into a car     This morning, as is my routine every morning, 7/52, I took my usual 2-mile walk around the small lake across the street from my house. The last several days… I’ve caught myself almost walking into a parked vehicle, along the curb. Literally, I was just a foot away from walking right into it.

I usually pay a bit more attention than that. But what I now realize (and my bride has told many times), is, that I walk with my head down…. Looking at the ground. I can tell you, just about, every piece of trash along my route. I’ve been doing that for years… I think, now, I’ve formed a “very bad habit,” if not, then a very dangerous one.

Again, this morning… I passed a fellow walking on the opposite side of the street (going the opposite direction), and didn’t even realize that I had passed him. I usually see him every morning… and throw my hand up, and pass a word or two… on the run. I felt a bit embarrassed that I missed him… o’well… maybe, he missed me.

So, my point here, is… is that the way we, or some of us, transverse life?  Do we go about our day…. with our head down; looking at a cell phone; reading a book; staring  out the window; day dreaming; and… letting the world “pass us by.” Is our head buried somewhere? Is our brain, or mind… off in LaLa land? Are we even paying attention? Are we present, and accounted for?

If this describes our life…now, then what do we look forward to? What will we see… if we’re “not paying attention” to those things around us. We’re passing by NATURE, for one thing… and it would look a heck of a lot better than the black, dirty pavement. Maybe, even, we’ve missed our “turn.” Does this describe your life?  Are we “looking down,” as we talk… as we listen to others…as we sit in school, the theater, or even, at Church? Do people know what we look like?

Watch others… maybe your children, or spouse… are they “looking down” all the time? No… I don’t mean, so much so, in the literal sense… but in the figurative sense… that we are just “not there”… paying attention.

You’ve probably noticed some people…who NEVER make “eye-contact.” We’ve all heard the cliché … be leery of the guy who won’t look you straight in the eyes.  If we (yes…you and me) are a bit GUILTY of what I’m describing throughout this article, then just maybe… it could have an adverse effect our career… our home life, our social life, or even…our spiritual lives. It might just keep one from getting a “certain promotion.” Or, an appointment to a special opportunity.

You know… one can have “plenty on the ball,” but if he’s not able to PROJECT… I’m paying attention…” type of presence…then he might be counted…OUT. Maybe our marriage (or job) could “fall apart” for “failing to communicate.” If we’re “not present” in mind, body, and spirit …then we’re not doing ourselves; those around us; those who depend on our participation and complete attention… JUSTICE.  Are we?

It could be, too, that when GOD gave you (or me) a certain opportunity 20 years ago…. That, we were “looking down,” and that moment of opportunity PASSED. It could be that 25 years ago, when I first read Matthew 28:19 – “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” …I MISSED His message to me, and didn’t discover it until just 3 years ago. I have FAILED, I believe, to follow Him… doing His work…”fishing for men,” as I should have been doing…. because, maybe…. I was looking down…. instead of up… or forward.

Missed “opportunities” could COST us “big-time,” on the day of JUDGEMENT …burying our head, or “looking down,” instead of looking FORWARD…and “paying attention,” could be a very costly mistake.
