What’s in a NAME? What name are you known by? At a much younger age, I was known as Charlemagne Juelawell Lehman Barri Samuel Aloysius Brookshireburgerstein… abbreviated to Charles J.L. Brooks. But, with a name like that…a nick name was born. AKA: Sam. Seriously…my brother called me SAM… because he thought it made me sound “tough(er).” It didn’t work…of course. I’ve also been called, or known by… a few other ‘names’ which not be repeated here.
My brother was known as Walter, Walt, WW, Bubber, or Bubba. Another brother was known as Phil, Phillip, Michael, Mike, or Sonny. Mike… being the survivor. A step-brother was Henry, Hank, Clifford, or Cliff…with Henry prevailing; or Lil’Henry. My step-father…Big’Henry. A half-brother was just plain ‘Bill.’ I could go on…but who really cares?
My point is…we’re known as, or called by… different names at different time-frames in the cycles of life. Childish names… when younger, and more mature names …when older. And, even our career choices seem to dictate the name we use. For some banker types, and attorneys… they prefer a name like… C. Juel Brooks. Even gender plays a part. Some ladies like to be known more by their middle name than their first name, as in… Mary Clayton Brooks, would be Mary-Clay when younger, and maybe M. Clay Brooks in a later… more professional, setting…mostly just to confuse people as to their gender. …I wonder.
Whatever the name…make sure that it doesn’t have “WANTED” in front of it. It is often said…It’s not our name, it’s not what we say… it’s not what we have, rather…. it’s what we do…with what we have.
How many different names would you think that God is known by? My research provides 72 different names, even more if you want to be crazy…if you add… “The Man Upstairs,” which, by most standards…would, or should, be considered as sacrilegious. The most commonly used Names among the primary religions would be: God, Jesus, Christ, Father, I AM, Creator, Jehovah, Teacher, Master, Lord, Almighty, and Emanuel.
There are many names that we use in calling out to the Lord. I prefer: God, Lord, or Jesus. It really doesn’t make any difference as long as we are RESPECTFUL, SINCERE, and LOVING.
Regardless of the name we use…He is there…always, and will answer when we call out His NAME. He is The God of Love; The God of Patience, and the God of All. He tells us in…Jeremiah 24:7 – I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart.
