Hold your tongue Mr. Brooks. Keep it to yourself. Shut your yap. Shut-up! As a youngster…I’ve hear all of these. All, of which, mean just one thing. Keep QUITE….keep your opinion to yourself. The tongue can be the deliverer of both good and bad tidings; sacred and evil; and love and hate. The tongue, however, is just an instrument that God designed, in some mysterious manner… that is CONNECTED to the human BRAIN.
So… the brain is the real culprit. The tongue, then, is like a gun. A gun is perfectly innocent until someone puts a cartridge in it, and pulls the trigger. Or, like a car, which is without malice, until a drunken driver gets behind the wheel. A camera is of absolutely “no use,” until, or unless, it is used to take a picture. The tongue can be a very wicked device, or an instrument of peace. It can be both, a WINNER, or a LOSER. It can say…YES, and NO.
Probably the worst thing the tongue can do… is GOSSIP. Here, the tongue, too often, just gets totally carried away. James, the half-brother of Christ, explains why gossip occurs, in James 4:8 – “But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” Seemingly, everyone eventually finds themselves the recipient of gossip and even tempted to gossip about others. The tendency to gossip is part of human nature, and taming the tongue requires God’s help.
Anyone whose reputation or relationships have been damaged through gossip can easily identify it for the evil that it is. The Bible speaks clearly about gossip in Proverbs 18:8 – “The words of a talebearer [a gossiper] are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.” We are also told in Proverbs 6:16-19 – There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
I can speak with AUTHORITY about the terrible effect of the TONGUE, as I have been VICTIMIZED all too often. If there is any merit in Heaven for “keeping my mouth shut,” while others have trampled all over my character and integrity, then I should get a FREE-PASS to Heaven. I know, too, that YOU could probably write a book on it to. So…why do we do it?
Let us then, to use our TONGUE to “praise the Lord.” In Philippians 2:11, it says – And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
