Alzheimer’s Disease: My wife and I just returned from visiting our brother-in-law, who turns 80 years old today, and we took one of my other brother’s-in-law, and his wife, along with us for the celebration of the milestone. Both of our brothers-in-law are suffering, and I do mean suffering…with Alzheimer’s. I don’t want to speak to the hardship that his disease racks on the spouses and children, as you most likely are familiar with the consequences without me elaborating on them here.
But…what I do want to talk about is a few of the things that we can do to lessen the chance and the impact of this terrible disease. Not in order of importance….I would ask that you support the research that is going on to find solutions, by sending a few dollars to your local chapter of Alzheimer’s Research. Next, I would ask you to consider as you pass the age of 50, and further, approach retirement age, that you STAY BUSY. Stay involved, either with your career profession, by offering to mentor, guide, and just “plain-ole’help” people to move forward in their personal and professional lives.
This will keep YOU mentally alert and focused on something other than being a couch potato. Or, get involved in some sort of CHURCH activity; doing counseling or any other service that would help others, and also help yourself. You can also, get involved “on your computer.” There is a whole other life out there in “www-land.” There is a website, or app, that will deal with absolutely “anything” that you can imagine…. that will, again, help you to stay alert, focused, and your brain working.
Also, I would ask that you EXERCISE on a daily basis. You can do simple workouts that will only take 15 minutes each day…every day. This will help you stay mentally alert and also to get the blood flowing throughout your entire body, especially your brain. Include in this exercise plan….daily…one-mile walks; which will strengthen your body, and also cause you to lose weight.
I would also ask that you seriously consider a deeper, more meaningful, more sincere…prayer life. Take your time, and just sit down, and “have a conversation with God.” I would confess my sins, seek forgiveness, and offer forgiveness to those you’ve offended. This will relieve the “built-up-stress,” that has likely been accumulating for some period, and by releasing this burden, your own health will improve; you will get more, and better, quality sleep…which, in turn, will keep your brain working better, and longer.
And lastly, I would ask that you “not smoke, that you not drink alcohol, and modify your diet such that your health will improve. I’ll not recommend a particular diet, as there plenty to choose from, and for me. For me, the best diet is: to cut out sweets (sugar), eat four times daily, with your primary meal being lunch; and don’t eat more than 2000 calories each day. You’ll lose weight quickly and become more healthy, and even sleep better; along the way to a “longer and healthy life. I recommend these things, and by doing them, consistently…. You will lose weight, have more pocket money, and you and Momma Bear, will have a longer and more quality life together.
As a “side-bar,”… consistent PRAYER and THANKSGIVING will give you a great sense of satisfaction, togetherness, and self-worth. Don’t give the devil a “foot-hold” in your life. Ephesians 4:27 …BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity. He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need.
